My wife's 2001 VW GTi was in a line of stopped cars that got nailed from behind by a Uhaul truck. The car in front of hers had the rear bumper and trunk caved in. The car behind hers had severe bumper and grill/hood damage, plus a caved in rear end from the truck.
My wife's GTi had minor scratches on the front and rear bumper covers and some damage to the bumper cores (but her coffee shot all over the interior). Since it had a manual transmission, she was sitting stopped at the light with the car out of gear and her foot lightly on the brake, so the impact energy was transferred through the car frame, for the most part.
When the two other drivers (both young women) got out and looked at their damage, then at the damage to my wife's car, they both said "I'm getting a VW!".
Chris9k - glad you're okay.
