Programmable Thermostat

I'm looking to incorporate a programmable thermostat into my heating system,
primarily when I'm running my wood boiler, which is plumbed in series with my primary Propane boiler (baseboard water heat).
Last winter I ran the wood boiler 24/7 and shut off the propane.
Works almost perfect, except the boiler would cool towards end of a log cycle (early morning or end of a long day), stays in good heating zone 6-8 hours if packed full.
This leaves my circulators running fairly ineffectively. the house does not get uncomfortably cool.
Propane would take over nicely if I left it on, but I cringe when I hear it running.
I thought of a set back t-stat to drop set temp around the time the boiler cools. Fine but.
Ideally I'd like to allow the set point of the house thermostat to vary slightly as the boiler varies from hot to cooler. the house can comfortably cool for a few hours after the boiler drops below effective heating temp. Higher set point when the boiler is cooking.
What's anybody got for ideas?
