I laid R30 unfaced batts across the existing insulation perpendicular to the joists. I used a mix of 15" wide and 23" wide rolls. The other poster is correct: you cannot compress the insulation for it to work.
To keep access up there and to store some stuff, I built platforms by nailing plywood to 2x6 in boards turned on their sides (i.e. not laying flat, turned them so the 1 1/2 inch width serves as the base). I set the 2 2x6s far enough apart so that one 23" batt precisely fits in between, sort of like 2 rails. the I nailed plywood to the 2 rails. Basically, this means that only 2 x 1 1/2" = 3" x the length of the desired platform is without insulation. Small loss.
If this sounds confusing, I will try to post a picture.
More interestingly, I did this project precisely 3 years ago, so I calculated the energy savings using 6 years of natural gas bills... 3 before and 3 after. Controlling for heating degree days, the savings was over 15%.
