A big company like Toyota, Nissan or Ford can afford to produce bottom feeders like Yaris, Versa or Fiesta because they have other car lines to support the thin margins of the the entry level models.
Companies like Kia and Hyundai have business models and products structured for entry level to mid-range business and certain types of customers. (the Hyundai Genesis is an exception here).
There's no practical way for Saab to compete in the $10,000 to $17,000 price range that real entry-level new cars compete in. Success is based on volume and the development and support costs are too high for the return they can yield. Not a wise place for a small company to play.
However, the new 9-2, supposedly based on the Mini, will likely cost in the low to mid $20K range, and if a 9-3 had base models starting in the mid- to upper-$20K range that could work well. Like the 3-series at BMW, the new 9-3 is really the key car for Saab.
I think back to 1984 when we got our first Saab. Is cost a big $11,600 for a base model C900 and we had to wait a couple months to get it. We looked at Hondas and Volvos and the Saab was a great deal. Never looked back.
