You need to be looking at crash safety - maybe that's what you meant by safety - but I wouldn't be too excited about Subaru's crash worthiness. The best car I've ever driven in the snow was an '88 Saab 9000T with Blizzaks. So solid it felt like dry pavement. I remember one trip through the mountains of Maine, and there were cars off the road everywhere and one car that had done the ping-pong bounce back and forth about four times along a bridge (scary). We had no problems at all in our 9000. I think the 9000 was a well-balanced car, and its oversteer/understeer tendencies were well-balanced. Plus, it crashes well. You should be able to get a decent one for $2K.
