I recently drove the 9-5 and found it to be better than I had anticipated based on early reports. At the same time, the NYT article has pretty much captured the issues.
GM rescued a deathbed Saab, and made enough improvements for the 9-3 to be attractive to me. I bought a 2003, then a 2006 Aero V6. Excellent cars in most ways, but it's still possible to mount a substantial argument in favor of the competition. I was hoping the next generation of GM improvements would produce the results I wanted, including a fully competitive 9-5.
Much as I think I'd like to update at some point with a new Saab, especially a 9-5, there is a cost / value / performance question which the article succintly summarizes. I am hoping for a little magic in the Spyker acquisition, but that can only be fueled by cash, and that can only come from sales volume. In the meantime, I will keep driving my current Saab; despite it's few shortcomings, I still prefer it to the other choices.
