You probably do not want a really bright light. Red LEDs are very efficient. You could use those in place of filament bulbs. Running the original bulbs continuously might overhead things and distort the plastic components. Brake lamps were not intended to be run continuous duty. When using an LED, you can then run things at a much lower voltage. You will not want an automotive LED bulb replacement, too bright.
