We had a '91 940 Turbo Volvo wagon. Got it with 55K on it, sold it 2 years later with 80K. It was hands down the worst car I've ever owned. The dealer (supposedly award-winning) was incompetent and dissed us because we hadn't bought it new. Expensive to repair, awful in snow, even with 4 Blizzaks and 140 pounds of sand in back. One massive piece of junk. Nice comfy highway car, and well built, just terrible to own. Maybe it was a Monday morning car. But I'd never buy another Volvo.
My two 9Ks by comparison, with more than 2X the miles the Volvo had, have been very reliable and not all that expensive to own. They need stuff, but hey, they are 15 and 16 years old and still working fine.
That said, a good 9K is hard to find now. Too many are on 4th, 5th or more owners and are less likely to be well cared for. If Chris P can find one, great, but look for a 9-5 wagon with a good service history. We have an '03 and it's been a fine car, needing little and working well.
