Battery maintenance in winter

Does anyone use a battery float/trickle/smart charger? I have a car that does not get used in winter and I am concerned about its battery going bad from lack of use.
Can a charger be hooked up to a car battery while it is connected to the car? I am looking for information from people with actual experience of doing this. I would like to avoid disconnecting the battery from the car while having the charger hooked up to it. If it is possible.
Also, I am seeing some smart chargers that are advertised as usable in low temperatures. Does anyone have direct experience of using a smart charger in very cold weather -- something like 0'F?
Thanks!
