I agree with others, a late model 9000 or 2.3L NG900 will be the best bang for the buck depending on one's biases/objectives. Of the 2, I would pick the 9000: Very safe (for the age), fast, well built, + tons of space. I haven't owned one, but I think the parts costs are comparable to c900 (ie much cheaper than 9-5, 9-3, etc) + they are new enough (up to 1998) that probably fewer parts have been obsoleted. NG900, particularly 2.3L is dirt cheap (lots of them + less desirable than 2.0L turbo) + supposedly can be very reliable, but is not as solid as 9000 imho...
That said, I love the c900s, and if you are in tune with your car + can diy, I am finding that they are fairly cheap to own (we have 2 daily driver c900s), but you need to find a good one + budget enough up front to "make it right" as soon as you can. Not doing so can cost big time down the road + leave you with an unreliable car... c900 is an icon + prices seem to have hit the bottom + are starting to turn around... The non-turbo sedans are the best value (everyone wants a turbo hatch + those tend to have been the most "used up")... even the least powerful cars are great fun to drive... look for rust, transmission problems, + check hg history on the 2.1L... some people give up on them due to age/inability to maintain them, but these days, more + more people holding onto c900's know the cars so the dealer serviced "creampuffs" are fewer + fewer...
Not to discourage you, but I would go into any purchase with your eyes wide open. $2000 might not be enough to buy a good car + fix it to long term reliable daily driver status unless you can do all the work yourself and/or find a real creampuff for dirt cheap...
James...
