I've been driving c900s as daily drivers for about 6 years now. I do all my own repairs. My first one was a '92 900T that I paid $600 and then went through it all. After I was done it was very reliable and didn't cost near $2000 to complete. It finally died with 230K+ miles on it when the oil pump failed and I unwisely kept driving to get home.
My current DD is a '93 900T convertible that I paid $1300 for. It has 103K miles on it. I had to make some minor repairs when I first got it. Recently I also just went through the whole motor after accidentally breaking a chain guide--figured while I had the motor out, might as well. Even with that I'm still only a little above $2K spent on the car.
My commute is 70 miles round trip.
If you shop wisely, I don't see any reason you can't get a good reliable SAAB (whatever model) to use as a DD.
My current DD. My old one is under the cover with the yellow fog lights waiting forme to decide what to do with it. :-)
