No - not preventative. It would have been done because they discovered the leak when they tested it. If it was done by the dealership they probably did it right which requires checking the head for flatness and resurfacing if necessary. If the car was overheated it's very possible the aluminum head got warped, causing the failed head gasket to begin with. Not really a good sign for the care that the car received, but those things do happen. I always liked the handling on the older Focus - have no idea how the new models are in that regard.
