I remember a college professor telling us about an "urban legend" regarding cold temperature current from lead acid cells. Some Canadian students had told him their cars started faster (starter motor spun faster) in really cold weather if they turned the headlights on first for a few seconds.
He said hog wash, then was surprised to discover it was true!
Momentarily placing a heavy current demand on lead acid cells causes them to heat up internally, which INCREASES their ability to deliver power in cold weather.
Maybe something similar is happening here, particulalry if your batteries are near end of life.
