Both diesel engine and batteries are heavy.
Diesel engines already deliver high torque, so the torque advantage of electric drive is less essential as engine displacement drops. Diesel engine can also idle with very little fuel consumption, unlike gasoline engine where overly lean fuel mix would produce detonation (diesel engine has "detonation" in every cycle by design), so shutting a diesel engine off at stop wouldn't gain much fuel economy.
Trains and ships use diesel eletric instead of gasoline-electric because of fuel safety issues. Both trains and ships have to go very long distance between fueling. With that much fuel carried, diesel is much safer than gasoline. Not to mention "bunk fuel" is much cheaper than gasoline per kcal. "Bunk fuel" is a much lower grade fuel, not the low-sulfer and highly refined diesel that we use in modern cars.
