Amazing discussion since I have a Saab 9-5 Aero SportCombi, a 08 MINI Cooper S and a VW Beetle TDI in the driveway and love all 3. The turbo MINI gets 32 MPG on my local commute, but 36 - 40 highway depending on how assertively I drive it. My wife gets 45 MPG with the TDI on her commute and we see 50 to 52 MPG on the highway. The Beetle is the older TDI. I drove newer TDIs when I lived in Germany and loved them. Thankfully we now have a few of them here with the improved power, quieter motors, and cleaner running engines (no smell, clatter, etc.) since we now have low sulfer diesel. I keep hoping we'll get to see the excellent 320d someday, and that Saab will offer its diesel.
