Finger operated controls in the hand rest are becoming more common in ag equipment also. Construction and ag machines are constantly moving, jostling the operators around enough, that at times, they have to hang on. Trying to operate a joy stick under such conditions can be tedious since they move so easily, the finger operated controls allow the operator to brace him – her self with the palms of their hands. Also I wouldn’t be surprised the finger controls are lower cost than the heavy duty joy sticks required to reliably survive the dirt, moisture, and vibration present in the operating environment. The old mechanical levers were in some ways easier to use since they were sturdy enough to hang onto, and offer some support.
An extreme example of operator control issues occurred when a motor grader went unstable during drawbar testing. The rear tandems of a motor grader were wildly bouncing up and down to their maximum travel (quite the site to see) when the tires exceeded their maximum traction. In other words the grader stopped moving forward while the tires were still rotating and grabbing for traction. It took many long seconds before the operator could stop the action, he was getting bounced around so badly, and hanging on so tightly, he could not get his foot on the clutch pedal. In those days the operators commonly would not use a seat belt. During testing, the machines could make such gross movements, a test engineer said, “it feels like the belt was going to tear me in two”.
At some point, the operator may just have to think about what he wants done, the machine will interpret his thoughts, and carry them out. What would happen if the operator starts thinking about his girl friend?
