His testimony espouses my own beliefs, that we are short changing our own futures my not properly valuing the efforts of physical labor. Mike Rowe's grandfather sounds a lot like my own father, and I am concerned by my sons' lack of interest in doing "the dirty stuff". And this is not because they were robbed of the opportunity to watch me doing these tasks.
My great grandfather was a ditch digger, actually a tile layer as the ditches he dug by shovel and pick were for laying clay tile to drain farm ground to make it more productive, and I still have some of his tools. In fact, they came in handy when I hand dug the trench for re-routing the underground electrical feed to our house to allow installation of our pool.
I heard something very frightening in an OSHA Safety Class earlier this year. Catepillar replaced the multiple control levers in their earth moving equipment approximately 20 years ago or so with joy stick controls. This was done because the array of former control levers were difficult and exhausting to use. The two joy sticks were simpler, ergonomically friendly, required less training for the operators, increased productivity, and resulted in less wear & tear on the operators.
Caterpillar is changing their control means again. Today's crop of young people entering the work force do not have the strength or manual dexterity to properly operate the joy sticks! Instead, the operator's cab of future earth moving equipment will be equipped with stationary plastic/rubber paddles in the approximate shape of the human hand. In the tips of each finger recess are tiny micro switches. Operators will control these massive pieces of machinery with the barest twitches of their finger tips because they lack the strength and stamina to move their hands for an entire day. Just go to Caterpillar's web site and look at the control station in their newest D3 series of bull dozers to see the changes.
Some aspects of our future are frightening.
