I've got a roll up one. No bearings at all, just a U-shaped aluminimum mount, and the rod/reel. Mine does work below my old diving board & slide.
Those plastic "bubble" covers I can get to last a couple seasons before they start crumbling away leaving a mess. I've also got to use bungy cords to keep it from flapping around (which never fails to block my skimmer). It also takes two of us to unroll it, otherwise the opposite side has a tendancy to fall into the pool where the pump pushes water over the film and causes it to fold under itself..
I can't also say whether I noticed a difference in my pool heating bill at all. I'm in Colorado, so the solar blanket didn't do a whole lot of heating when it's all about heat loss at night and trying to recover it "before" you swim during the day.. Easier to just heat it through the night.
I've just sort of given up on it. I'm thinking this year I'll just mount my leaf/debris roll to the rod for those windy days.
And lol... I too have been looking at those hard foldable covers since they have heat retention (insulation) during the night...
