Visited New Haven to tour Yale a few years back when daughter was considering colleges. We were all quite taken aback by the circumstances overall there. #1 crime rate in the state. Could easily be the best place in CT were it not for this fact. East Rock and Westville are statisically the safest areas there.
Has a big city feel with museums and nice restaurants and the like(Yale clientele) and with all the big city problems. Serious personal risk crime and incidents all well above the national average. Would be worth the piece of mind to commute in.
Think Newark, New Jersey then drop an Ivy league College in the middle outfitted with a very well manicured Military Base style perimeter security fence.
BTW Fairfield, CT was rated a top ten city to live in by CNN/Money magazine. Stamford was farther down the list.
Best of luck to you.
