I have to wonder if parts would be an issue for either--they're both pretty rare. Actually what got me thinking about this was a Top Gear episode where they start out in a rain forest in South American and then go over mountauns and finally desert. They actually had an old Land Cruiser and a Range Rover and they did pretty good. I'd be more inclined to choose a previous generation Jeep Wrangler--it has comparible simplicity and ruggedness but parts would be more available.
