As an addition to the bear discussion a few days ago, below is a link to the classic Saab solution to the bear problem.
Personally I don't think that carrying a gun will add much security, to me it seems that it's usually hunters who end up having problems with bears, very rarely wildlife photographers or unarmed hikers.
Many colleagues of mine study bears and I know a fellow who's experimentally studying bear-human interactions. He's been equipping Finnish brown bears (Ursus arctos, technically the same species as the North American Grizzly) with gps-gsm collars and then sent student volunteers walking towards the whereabouts of the bear. From his laptop screen he can see what the bear does when the students approach. Virtually always the outcome is one of two options: either the bear flees when sensing the approaching humans or it first hides and then flees. In one single event the bear first hid, then started following the students... If I remember correctly the students never saw a single bear during the first two years of the study.
When humans encounter bears, there's plenty of room for 'communication problems'. Usually surprised bears give humans plenty of opportunities for leaving the scene. A bear standing on its hind legs is just showing off, not attacking. Luckily I've never seen an attacking bear, but they're supposed to behave very differently: they're silent, on all four legs, head kept low, and coming right towards you...
I'll be spending the next 10 weeks doing fieldwork in the Rockies in Colorado. Earlier today I was cleaning my cabin from pieces of window glass, left by a visiting black bear last summer. If the bugger returns, I'll tell him to clean up after himself.
And remember, Saabs kill and injure more humans than bears.
