True, I don't think anyone should be seriously scared of bears but one should definitely be prepared. We're talking of large animals that have the potential to kill you in a matter of seconds. Keeping a reasonable level of noise (stepping on twigs, whistling, singing etc.) should be the default when walking in woods with large carnivores around.

Leaving food out attracts all kinds of animals and is just plain stupid. At the market square in Helsinki there's a problem with gulls stealing ice cream and pies from the hands of people, because a few steps away people keep feeding those same gulls.
