You quickly learn what freeways and interchanges to avoid, and when.
Avoid downtown Detroit in the afternoon rush hour. Some nimrod decided decades ago that it would be a good idea for I-75, I-94, I-96 and the M-10 expressways to all intersect within a three mile stretch. You can picture the results. Conversely, at 5:30am on my morning commute this same stretch of highway is a breeze! In the afternoon I take the far outer route of I-696 and I-275, which still backs up but not as bad - usually.
BTW: If you think I-94 has NASCAR speeds, I-696 has Indy car speeds! And a number of the drivers must be mental.
