I'm amazed and distressed at the number of people who replace appliances just for the sake of having something new. I bought a house a couple of months ago, and pretty much all of the appliances had something wrong with them. I fixed all but two of them myself, the exceptions being the fridge and dishwasher - the fridge because it was 20 years old and using 120kWH per month (replaced with used, 5 year old fridge) and the dishwasher which had multiple faults (replaced with used). In my search for used appliances, I came across dozens of people selling most or all of their appliances because they didn't match, or they re-modeled the kitchen and were the wrong colour. No one fixes anything anymore. My stove had an electronic fault, and I was quoted $500 for the module, and advised to buy a new stove. The "old" stove was in perfect condition other than this module that represented less than 0.1% of the mass of the stove, and they wanted me to send it to the landfill. Well, I don't play that game. I found the fault on the pcb and fixed it myself for essentially nothing. It's frustrating that we live in a such a throw-away society. People talk about recycling cans and whatnot, but don't think twice about chucking the big items out. I'm more happy about the fact the stove is not in a landfill than I am about the money I saved.
