I didn't bother on my latest Mac, a mid-range MacBook Pro. I wouldn't bother on a Mac Air. Lot to be said for flash memory. But do get a good protective cover/case for it, especially if you travel much.
My experience with Macs is that they are very reliable and durable. I'm on mine 8-10 hours a day, and some of it's heavy lifting with graphic design and video editing. Plus I travel a lot and over 15 years of PowerBooks/MacBooks I've had no issues that a software/firmware update couldn't cure. I use one 2-3 years, then my wife uses it 2-3 years. I've had a couple things fixed due to damage from dropping the computer, but that's it. And if a drive does die, they aren't expensive to replace.
However... I got the Apple Care plan on the MacBook my daughter took to college. That was a good move as it covered 2 new hard drives when she dropped the computer.
