carmakers and Washington"
Behold the rise of fascism: government-corporate combine to silence all would-be competition. All the carmakers' financing subsidiaries had to take government money during the crash as government hand-outs gave their competition an edge. How long will it be before "the Great Leader is always correct; and the party is always unerring!" a la "1984" and North Korea.
Why is freedom of choice by consumers (i.e. "free market competition") and multiple contending voices important? Because human beings are prone to suffer from hubris and subjectivity. In this thread alone we have "gas hogs" burning 600 gallon to 1000 gallons a year if not more (result of driving 30k miles) lecturing others on the need to consume less gas! For the record, I burn only about 150 gallons a year. Presumably lithium batteries and other technologies for achieving higher gas mileage are limited resources, and the making of which would cost tons of energy in itself. So, why is it a good idea to spread the resources thin and force it onto everyone driving only 3k miles a year and consequently bidding up the prices for the 30k/yr drivers who really want/need them?
Likewise, as a result of our dumbed down education system, many people naturally think "we" import oil because we don't have enough in this country . . . whereas in reality the importation is taking place because foreign sources are cheaper (after the oil oligopolies transfer cost of military intervention to taxpayers). It's just like people buy food and stuff at out-of-town Walmart not because their local grocers don't have them but because Walmart sells them for less. If the town were to pass an ordinance restricting all families to spend no more than $300/mo on food as a way of reducing "food demand," the result would not be less importation of food into the town but more people would have to import from Walmart in order to stretch their $300 allowance far enough. To the extent that politicians, lobbyists and bureaucratic enforcers don't produce anything of substance, their lack of production further exacerbate the need to import more goods of all types, lest there be an even more substantial drop in standards of living.
The loss of jobs to overseas is simply the result of people having to look for cheaper substitutes overseas when government bid up prices for domestic goods and labor. Those cheaper substitutes include "sour crude" oil in lieu of "sweet crude" produced in this country.
