basically cheap econoboxes with an "exotic" drive train that the mfgr can charge more for.
As commuting rats they are OK if all you want is transportation. If you want fun you're not going to be shopping at Toyota anyway. My wife would think a Pious was fine for 90% of her driving and would love the fuel economy. But she wouldn't want one for a trip.
I've rented them and they aren't terrible. They just aren't remotely in the same league as a Saab or even most real cars.
