I rebuilt my Dell Dimension 4700 Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Thu, 1 Sep 2011 06:21:33 In Reply to: Re: dell desktop computer question, JerseySaab [Profile/Gallery] , Wed, 31 Aug 2011 19:00:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
(it's what I'm using right now). Unless you are very tech-savy and like this sort of thing, I would not recommend this route. I bought a $25 motherboard (after rebate), a new Pentium Core2Duo processor for about $55, some faster RAM (cheap), and a different fan with the correct number of pins (about $10). Many plugs left in the case were not compatible with the new motherboard without some work, the old processor would not work with the new board despite the spec that said that it would, and worst of all my XP install disk which did not have Service Pack 2 on it and would not work with the new hardware; I had to find another copy that had Service Pack 2 which took a while. Your Dell XP restore disk will absolutely not work with a new motherboard. I had to modify the case a bit with a hammer to beat down a weird protrusion in the middle of the motherboard mounting.
OK, it was a "project" and got me ready for the real prize which is modifying my Mac Color Classic with modern internals - someday.
