True that the move for protection under the court -- apparently now denied -- was aimed at avoiding bankruptcy, but it is difficult to see the silver lining. Although my experience -- all from afar -- is solely related to the capital goods business, the principle is the same: No company initiates such moves willingly. Neither is there much strategy in the actions.
Court protection, bankruptcy, variations thereof, all tie the hands of management. Manufacturing and product decisions, capital investment, possibly even marketing and dealer appointment decisions require approval or are limited by terms of the court agreement or administrator.
I am still hoping for Saab's fairy godmother to wave her magic wand, but the likelihood is diminishing. Neither does it seem likely that any significant automaker would be interested in the acquisition for a long list of reasons (no analogy with the Jaguar experience, for example).
We need to hope for the best and prepare for the worst -- which I think, unfortunately, is imminent. Rose-tinted glasses won't help.
