Fiats simply did not hold up well under American driving conditions, where most people don't maintain according to factory schedule, drive long distances, and drive on heavily salted roads in the winter. As I said, there is a reason that they left the American market.
Everyone I know that had a Fiat had severe mechanical and rust problems with them while the cars were still relatively young. (We're not talking just cosmetic damage to body panels, we're talking about severe structural rust with suspension and steering gear pulling loose, and after just a few years, not after decades.)
The only Saab model I know of that had problems of this magnitude was the ill-fated Saab/Lancia 600 that was sold only in Sweden, and of course we know who owns Lancia. (One of the more memorable moments on Top Gear was when Clarkson, pointing to a bucket of rusty scrap metal, said "This is a Lancia.") Fortunately Saab did not go to Lancia/Fiat for rustproofing technology when they co-designed the "Type 4" platform that became the Saab 9000!
Whether today's Fiats will suffer from the same problems in the U.S. we won't know for a while.
