I got the axe about three years ago and collected unemployment for about a year. It was the best year I've can remember. I got to spend a lot of time with my grandchildren and got to do things with them I never had time for with my own children. More importantly I had some time to think about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I'd spent most of my life in sales and marketing (as well as owning two small businesses) but getting into my mid-fifties, I just wasn't getting offered (or even interviewed for) the good jobs anymore. I hated being couped up in an office all day and wanted to do something different. I'd always been a gearhead and had developed a wealth of mechanical, jack of all trades type skills over the years and liked that kind of work. Long story short, my wife and I came up with the idea of working for the ultra-rich. In a stroke of extreme good fortune we landed an entry level job in Aspen. After two years there, when we decided to move on we found we were IN DEMAND--we were flown all over the country for interviews. They actually considered our age, stability, experience and skills all to be ASSETS! So we ended up getting a great job in the Detroit area- 2 1/2 hours from our family. So now I really love what I do, I'm outdoors all day and I'm in the best physical condition I've been in years. Not too shabby for a guy who'll be 60 in May. Sometimes a seeming disaster can be the boot in the rear it takes to get you to move in a different direction.
