I have all my windows and doors hard wired, the sensors all about, and now have tons of false alarms. I'm sure the previous owners spent a fortune on the system. I've turned it off. My thought on a system is to get something that works off of motion/IR and has a panic alarm. And the alarm likely needs to work off of a cell phone because any self respecting bad guy would cut the phone wire...
I had an alarm system guy tell me that the most effective deterrant is a very loud alarm inside the house and out. The noise inside drives them out, and the noise outside attracts attention.
