He stood on the shoulders of giants Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Thu, 6 Oct 2011 10:57:05 In Reply to: agreed, brick8, Thu, 6 Oct 2011 08:40:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Yes, you definitely have to give Steve Jobs a fond farewell and credit for innovating products that so many people actually wanted to buy, based on existing technology.
Don't forget, though, it was Ken Olsen of DEC who conceptualized and built the first computers that an individual could actually sit down with and use interactively in real time. (Before that it was all batch processing.) The idea of the graphical interface and mouse came out of the Xerox Palo Alto research lab. (Xerox did not understand what they had and what could be done with it. Jobs did!) For that matter, the very first business computer used for routine office work was developed at the J. Lyons company in England, a catering and tea shop concern, 60 years ago (a fascinating story in its own right, see http://kzwp.com/lyons/leo.htm, or search "Lyons Electronic Office" in your favorite search engine).
Many pioneers of technology have come and gone, mostly invisible to the general public, yet without them we would not have today's Apple products, the internet, or any of the technology that today is taken for granted. So we should celebrate the achievements of Steve Jobs and mourn his loss, but understand that there are many others that labored outside the spotlight to make those achievements possible.
