I have successfully paired an iPhone 3GS to my stereo (not my phone, I use Android) and my 5th gen iPod Nano works great. The 3GS+Pandora was pretty cool, but unfortunately there is no Pandora app for Android and I'm not switching. I don't imagine you'd have any problems using any recent iDevice - either via standard USB cable or Bluetooth - with the stereo. Crutchfield may have some actual testing done on this front, it'd be worth checking out the link.
Trust me when I say I shopped extensively for these features:
1. Rear USB port (I don't like cables hanging out of my dash
2. Bluetooth
3. Black housing
4. Green or white lighting (like, no red or blue)
to go to into my '85 SPG, my '86 XR4Ti, and my '07 Solstice. Not many units available were a match. The only other head unit I found which could meet this criteria is the Kenwood KDC-BT948HD (and now KIV-series) head unit, which I also bought. The Kenwood is *superb* in that it also incorporates HD Radio and has a nicer display, but it one one glaring, unholy flaw: There is a "next folder" button, but no "previous folder" folder button. I've got a 16gb flash drive in my Solstice, the car that ended up with the Kenwood. It has a LOT of folders on it. Navigating with no way to go to the previous folder is such a pain I don't even have words for it. For $300, I expected more.
I put the JVC in the Saab, the Kenwood in the Solstice, and then I bought a second JVC for the XR4Ti. Zero regrets. I wish it had HD Radio, and I wish it had physical numbered buttons for stereo presets, but those are wishes and not usability issues and I knew what I was getting before I did. At the price point, it's tough to beat.
Like Mike suggested, I did look into Nakamichi, but you don't even get MP3 playback until you get into their $500 stereos, and I don't have much application for a CD player in 2011. Carrying a folder full of CDs to shuffle around is a big pain, and I like the fact that when my flash drive melts or fails I just get a new one and copy my music right back. That convenience/safety is worth a slight loss in quality, and I can't say I mind having the extra money in my pocket.
