External drives, unfortunately, are not all that long-lived, and do need to be replaced periodically. But they are still a good way to back up all your data. And they are cheap enough so you can have some redundancy. And all your stuff stays under your control.
My current approach is a Western Digital 2TB RAID drive connected to my Airport Extreme router. This puts it on my network and anyone in the family can back up their computer to it. The drive is actually two 1 TB drives, so it is a mirrored RAID. If the main drive dies, everything is still on the other drive. I also back up my own MacBook Pro to one of my external drives (also mirrored) so my data is in two places. I don't do that often enough, though.
Time Machine is OK, but it doesn't store individual files (such as a music library) so they are easily accessible: I don't think you can't go in and find a specific file. I find it better to just drag and drop my files to the external drive, delete the previous back up and be done with it. There are no doubt flaws in this logic, but it works for me.
