I'm not familiar with Western Digitals's RAID setup, but it is most likely a proprietary software RAID that has had limited development, testing, and field exposure.
In general your operating system's built-in software RAID is probably going to be more robust, assuming that the drives are not hidden behind a special controller. As I mentioned, Linux RAID works quite well. I don't work much with Microsoft products but for Windows users I believe that Windows 7 Pro has built-in RAID capability.
