I recently replaced my 5 year old's "made in China" rubber boots that spontaneously tore in several places. This is the first pair of boots he hasn't grown out of. They were replaced with "made in Canada" rubber boots of the same brand we've always used in the past. The Canadian made ones are virtually indestructible + last for multiple children + get passed around... and they cost less also!
My point: though the Chinese are capable of producing quality, the stereotype exists for a reason... there is a fine tradition of ultra low end manufacturing there! Electronics are not much different than rubber boots. Chinese companies do not just counterfeit assemblies like DICs and watches etc... components are regularly counterfeited also... so (among other things) one has to be vigilant with the supply chain...
Though they're not bad, I don't consider Apple products to be terribly high quality (I can cite a list of common failures)... but Miele makes their lowest end vacuums in China, and that is a company that *really* understands high quality. And they *own* the facility + from what I've heard, manage it in an extremely hands on way...
maybe what I'm saying is, that one *can* do high quality manufacturing in China doesn't mean it is easy!
James...
