Ok, but free does not mean no support, and pay sure as heck doesn't mean you get a good product with good support. They are honestly totally independent. You're going to have to evaluate this on a application-by-application basis. Blanket stereotypes are not helpful.
That said, MOST anti-virus and system cleanup software is junk. Like buying anything, read reviews from trusted sources, do your research, Beware of FUD.
If theres a free and a pay version of a given piece of software, see what the difference is. Often free trials are time limited, or feature limited. OTOH, often there will be an open-source core package and a pay version thats turn-key. In that situation, it's more like CHT says: you pay for support and ease of use. Usually the OSS version will be fully functional, but maybe without a pretty user interface.
