Getting rid of "marginal" brands was a condition for the goverment bailout. Do you really think GM went through the design of the new models and then retooling the factory just to shut it - right at the momemnt the first cars started rolling off the line? They were forced to get rid of Opel as well - but managed to withstand the pressure and keep it in the end.
If you want to know who killed Saab I have an answer for you - it was the market that killed it. GM was really trying to save the brand in the end (with all the 9-4x and ng9-5 development).
