Given the number of sales, the deep discounts and the cost of Swedish labor I do not think the GM had to cook its books too much to post a loss. In modern world a small volume manufacturer can only survive by making a niche product and charging a premium. Post-GM Saab _required_ a miracle to survive - I was hoping getting rid of GM heritage and partnering with a Dutch sports car maker would bring back buyer in droves - especially those who were holding out for the new 9-5. Instead the general public got scared, 9-5 sales tanked (actually never even went up) even with discounts. Saving Saab at this point is just throwing good money after bad. Selling Saab to Chinese is more like using the old name to create a new brand. It would only be profitable with a massive production shift to China. And I totally understand GM desire to keep its latest technology away China shore (unless they are the ones making and selling it).
