I got my 335d after owning a '08 335i for two years. The diesel came with a $4500 eco credit that priced it LOWER than the same 335i. My 335i suffered from the chronic fuel pump issue of the twin turbo 6 cylinder engine (2 in 8000 miles) and it also dumped all of its transmission fluid at 612 miles. Needless to say, I wasn't really loving the car, nor did I trust it. I got the 335d and don't regret it for one second.
In LA stop and go city traffic, my 335i got 12-13mpg. My 335d gets 21-22mpg. Not great by eco car standards, but considering this car does 0-60 in 5.3 secs and gets 36+mpg on the highway, it was a major jump.
Diesel is currently around 25 cents more expensive than premium in LA (it was 30 cents less when I bought the car). Even so, if I do all the math, I'm coming out ahead.
Honestly, I love the diesel torque, it produces less CO2 and has been 100 percent trouble free over two years. I always loved diesel cars I rented in Europe and was excited that BMW was finally bringing a real Euro-diesel over I got 41 mpg on a LA-Vegas trip recently....not bad for a car with performance like this one!
I love my Saabs....but this BMW is probably the best car I've ever owned. Interestingly, the new body style doesn't have a diesel option for 2012...and I don't know if they will bring one over now, sadly. If they bring a 2 liter 320d, I'll jump on that in a heartbeat.
