Would it be possible to restrict the GM based cars to all global markets except China, accelerate development of cars without GM platforms and content for sale in ALL global markets, and do so fast enough to keep Saab alive without going bankrupt again in the meantime?
The new 9-3SS due in 2013 or 2014 "may" contain too much GM DNA being based on GM's Epsilon Plus platform, or whatever it is called.
Another item not mentioned previously, as far as I know, is that GM is currently facing a worldwide shortage of 4-cylinder engine manufacturing capacity. A healthy Saab, if combined with old contractual guarantees for engines, could suck 60,000+ engines per year out of GM's own products! A new engine plant would cost GM hundreds of millions of dollars to construct. Yes, it has been a while since Saab sales were so robust but they were above 130,000 units/year within the past decade.
I think GM's stalling on every deal is based on more than their unsubstantiated claims of IP loss, especially since SAI and BAIC are already using GM IP in China.
