What does it need, how long do you want to keep it?

A good car with a known history has an intangible value.
What is in the $3,000? Which model is it? How long have you had it? Do you have a long history with it?
If it needs a lot of work right now, so you have to pony up the cash all at once (or put it on a card), it can be a tough call. But if you look at it the way NoSnaab suggests there is value over time in spending the money. You can't get a whole lot these days for $4,000 that isn't going to need another grand or so poured into it in the 6-12 months after purchase--and that can be wear items, like brakes, tires, exhaust. So how do you want to spend your money?
A little perspective...
I just had the original clutch replaced and some other needed work done on my '96 9000 --at 183K. The car is otherwise sound, with new shocks, springs and SAS bars at 150K. Known history for most of it's life, especially the last 93K miles. But with a dead clutch the car wouldn't be worth much, and since it's strong otherwise it made sense to bite the bullet. With just a little luck I can run it for another 3-4 years (maybe more as a hobby car) which is certainly better than finding some unknown quantity that'd need a cash infusion.
OTOH--
If you know of a solid car with a know history you can get for the right price it's OK to let yours go. I just did that, too. Sold my daughter's '95 9000CS --it needed stuff-- and got a '96 CS in better shape with less miles from a Saab guy I know. It's a known quantity and needed a few small things, but should last several years.
So think this through and do what works for you.
