As strong as Fiat is, seems unlikely for an Italian company to step in right now:
the timing is just really perfectly horrific for Saab, but I too remain hopeful.
Also Fiat's CEO found the appeal of having investment in Opel (when GM was considering selling Opel) very poor, ie, risk/reward of investing in Opel.
The timing for China is also very bad. Life and business is all about timing.
