Menards, an upper midwest chain, was offering Continental 2-slice toasters on Black Friday for $2.96. Even if each one only lasted two years, you could get a 40-year supply for just $60! :)
Perhaps a more extreme example but it again shows how our consumer society has become a lot about cheap (price and quality). Seeing $10 or less toasters makes it difficult for some to justify paying $150 or more when that was the typical price, in today's dollars, for quality toasters decades ago. Many people are willing to take a chance on a $10 toaster even if it means having to frequently replace it, and fill up the landfills.
Our Sunbeam toaster, no idea what it cost, has been problem free for at least six years now.
