I am trying to be both pragmatic & optimistic Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 02:32:01 In Reply to: Re: Ann Arbor losing its Saab Dealership?, kkelley, Thu, 12 Jan 2012 17:17:34 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Saab stopped production of new automobiles in April of 2011. Availability of spare parts started to become a problem with the December 19th bankruptcy filing and are now impossible to obtain. Warranty service for all model years no longer exists, regardless of GM's published statements, due to no reimbursement and/or no parts.
Bankruptcy hearings are continuing in Sweden which may result in a new owner and continuation of the brand, which will need a Dealership network, or the brand may die with assets liquidated. Regardless of which of these two scenarios prevail, spare parts availability will return in some manner (witness British Heritage and parts for 30+ year old sports cars) and the thousands of Saab owners in the Ann Arbor area (the cars are popular here) will need to have their vehicles serviced.
Dealerships exist to both sell sell automobiles and repair them. Having the lone local Dealership rumored to completely abandon the brand 3/4s of the way through the final chapter is distressing.
I continue to hope Saab survives. I hope Dealerships will continue to service the cars they once sold. Even the Independent Saab Garages, and Ann Arbor has a great one, need Dealerships as a parts source.
