I sued someone in my county who's business was based in a different county - I had to have the summons served in the other county by that county's sheriff's office. Of the many actions that their lawyer used to try to get the lawsuit thrown out, crossing county boundaries was not one (the defendant conducted business in my county).
I would imagine that GM has some place of business in almost every state, if that is a criteria.
