I became aware of how easy it is to get past most locks by "bumping". And most locks are trivial to pick as well. If you file an insurance claim and there is no sign of forced entry.....
With key bumping, most residential locks can be defeated in seconds by someone with no skills.
So I do research and want high security Medeco M3 or Schlage Primus XP lock cylinders. The existing entrance lock sets in the house are also old and junk.
I order new hardware and cylinders. They supply Medeco KeyMark cylinders [not expected M3], not happy but go with the flow and install. KeyMark is a good pick/bump resistant lock. Excellent key control etc.
So I drop by the shop to see if the back ordered electronic deadbolt has arrived, not, and I am inspecting all of the display hardware and locks. These have "sample cores" and keys stamped "sample". I recognized some that were KeyMark and I wonder if they have the same keyways as mine. The keyways are specific to locksmiths as part of key control. Well, my key fits into the sample lock, so the sample lock key ways are specific to this locksmith -OK. I turn the key and the lock opens, I try my key in other sample locks and they open. The display locks have keys stamped sample and the sample keys all have the same cuts as the keys that open my locks at home. WTF!
The intent of key control is that no one else with that keyway will have the same keys. Someone can take the keys from the display locks and enter my house. So they said they would fix and I said "no, get the Medeco M3 cores".
Later the M3 cores arrived and I swapped them in.
One door has the commercial grade electronic keypad and a [M3] lock cylinder which pretty well makes a lock-out event impossible. If you have high security keyways and get locked out, a lock smith will not be able to pick the lock to let you in! Drilling the M3 core is mostly impossible as well. While many digital keypad entry systems are available, most come with lock cores that are easily bumped or picked.
A thief can then break windows or kick in doors, but will typically move on to a softer target.
