depends on the dog... friends of ours were broken into through a basement window (even though the back door was unlocked). idiot thieves took low end electronics (sony/panasonic) but left the good stuff (naim), ignored several tens of thousands worth of high end bikes but took the beer from the fridge... I like beer too, but clearly these were not the brightest minds!
anyway, my friends were mainly concerned that their dog (who was home) didn't get hurt (fortunately was fine)... very friendly, not much of a watch dog...
I like dogs, but probably a well advertised alarm is the best deterrent...
good quality lock cylinders are worthwhile... the junk they sell at Home Depot etc with the "reprogrammable" cylinders lasts about a year before disintegrating internally + seizing... or at least that was my experience... seasoned thieves can probably open one of those in seconds... that said, I've seen the work of professionals... literally ripped the deadbolt lock right out of the steel door in a break-in that occurred in a 1 hour window while the residents were out! wouldn't have mattered what lock/cylinder was in there... crazy... they now have an alarm...
James...
