Not often, IMO. However, starting in the early nineties, propritary communications buses became the norm. I worked on one project where the body computer was a gateway between two entirely different protocols. For one model year.
As it goes on, worries about tuning and emissions appear to be driving things a little more complicated. Software version numbers must be compatible between certain modules, etc.
If all a person wanted was a basically funcional antique 2008 9-3 (after the switch to the general's new comm architecture) ... In 30 years that might be a really difficult thing. I presume that every manufacturer has a proprietary message schema, but i've only seen bits of three or four.
Some controllers do develop a reputation for failure. Not to pick on GM, but the C5 corvette apparently had troubles keeping ABS modules alive and they're out of production and a little dear already.
